Transport in North Cyprus
Finding your way around North Cyprus is normally very simple, whether you decide to go it alone or use public transport. In Cyprus, towns and villages are well signposted so if you are finding your own way round it’s quite difficult to get lost; you can always use the mountains, which run east-west, to get your bearings!
When you first travel to North Cyprus it’s a good idea to buy a local map, hire a car and explore the area; it’s amazing the things you can discover!
Public transport in Cyprus
If you don’t fancy hiring a car then there are plenty of taxis or you can jump in a Dolmus, which is a kind of shared taxi (It will always have ‘dolmus’ indicated on it). These are much cheaper than hiring a private taxi and they run between and around all towns and villages.
There are no scheduled bus services. Instead minibuses with set routes written on them travel between towns and villages and will stop whenever someone flags them down. These buses are very cheap; for example a journey of 15km can cost as little as 2 Turkish Lire (about 80p). So, when trying to get around North Cyprus, these transport systems offer a cheaper alternative to car hire.
If you have children attending a local school, you will find that most provide school buses similar to the American school bus system. Some schools include the cost of this service within their fees, whilst others charge extra. School buses are normally very flexible and drop the children very close to their homes.
North Cyprus car hire
Northern Cyprus car hire is simple and inexpensive. You need to be 25 and have a valid UK or international driving licence. Driving is on the left, the same as the UK, and traffic laws such as the use of mobile phones whilst driving, drink driving and the use of seat belts are strictly enforced.
Prices range from £15 to £30 per day according the season and type of car hired. Luxury cars such as Mercedes are also available at a premium rate. There is normally a 3 day minimum rental period. Hire cars are easy to identify as they all have red number plates.
